Stench

I am just warning you all that this story is a rather disgusting one, so read on at your own risk. I need to post it to get it out of my head. I am currently working on painting the kitchen cabinets for a short term fix on a much bigger project that we will be dealing with at a later date. The other night I was cleaning out the cupboards and moving some things onto shelves, and put some boxes on one of the top shelves in the kitchen. As I am going about my business I notice that the stench I caught wind of every now and then (and thought was something in the freezer) was much more pungent. The kitchen isn't that big so it didn't take long to locate the general area emanating something putrid. As I got on the step ladder to peer into the upper cabinet I see a pool of blackish liquid that has dripped down from the shelf above where I had placed the boxes. I muster all available courage to take the boxes (without looking up there) off the shelf. Dark liquid is beyond smelly and all over the bottom of the box. I decide I must take a look. As I peek up over the shelf I see a brownish, hairy mass and practically fall off the ladder.

As I contemplate shrieking at the top of my lungs, I think of the LG quietly sleeping in the next room, and the BK who would have already been shrieking at this point, and decide that someone has to be the adult. I collect myself for one more peek and step slowly up the ladder. There, lying on the top shelf is the smelliest rotten potato (with roots growing suspiciously like hair) I have ever seen or whiffed. The aroma almost nearly made me pass out on the way to the trash can. On the bright side, this story doesn't end with me shrieking, waking the LG, calling exterminators, and putting the house on the market the very next day. Below is a pic of the kitchen with after shots to hopefully follow next week. And yes, I will post pictures of the interior one of these days.

I think rotten potatoes are the smelliest thing. That's funny though, I thought you were going to say it was a dead mouse or something that was once alive.

I hate to admit this , but we had rotten potatoes in our trailer pantry. Only it was my fault for forgetting them...They had little black bugs living on them and it smelled like something had died in the kitchen. I'm glad you found the problem. Isn't being a housekeeper so adventurous??:)

Sick. Almost as sick as the time I found a breast of chicken rotting in a really hot refridgerator in my garage in LA. Talk about stench! Rotting flesh?? ICK!!!

That is pretty gross. I can relate, as I had a rotten potato experience too.

I hope all the unpacking & getting organized is going well for you guys. And congratulations on the purchase of your home.

So sorry...but so proud of you for being so brave. Hope things are moving along in getting settled. We are looking forward to the "after" pictures. We are very happy you are happy with the house. It looks cozy and cute. Can't wait to visit it in person.

As soon as you said "stench" I immediately thought, oh, nothing can be as stinky as that rotten potato I found under my kitchen sink. Funny. I really don't think anything can compare to the smell of a rotten potato. Even the 5 pounds of chicken breast spouse forgot to unload from the back of my car, which I drove around for a few days in 115 degree weather before discovering, is not nearly as disgusting as the potato. Most sorry you had to discover that yourself.

Come on Jen!! Your cousins grew up on a potato farm!!!

Just wanted to say hi and see how everything is going. We met up with your folks yesterday in Maine and had a fun time. They told me you guys are doing well and that John is liking his new job. Are you still working from home? Do you like Portland? Megan and I are hoping my job will relocate us next year back to the west somewhere... we'll see. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and feel free to check out our blog sometime.
